Problem Solving: How to Update a Classic
Problem: How can one craft a new experience out of the Arcade Classic, Asteroids?

-
In one of my first term classes we were presented with an assignment that initially perplexed me. We were asked to make a cover of the game asteroids, but to add our own twist.

-
Asteroids is a classic for a reason with addictive gameplay and fantastic physics, and in those physics I saw potential. In my experimenting I coded the ship's projectiles to come out of the ship's top rather than the bottom.

-
To my surprise it looked like it was being propelled by the little dots, and with that visual inspiration struck. That if the player was propelling themselves with water?

-
The initial versions of the game were quite uninspiring, as it felt like there was no real hook outside the funny controls. More work needed to be done. So I went to the drawing board and began brainstorming objectives for a score-based game.

-
After a few days of brainstorming I came up with an idea. What if the games was about keeping flowers hydrated? With that question in mid the ball started rolling. Asteroids could replenish the players once defeated to encourage risky play, and your score can be based on how long you last!

-
With newfound direction my problem was solved, and Hydrobot was the solution!
